Joanne and Anaru attend Barcamp 5 in Auckland.

Barcamp is an international network of user-generated conferences for designers, developers and those interested in creative industries that use technology. Offering open workshop-events, the content of which is all provided by participants. The first Barcamp was held in California in 2005, it has rapidly become an internationally recognised and supported annual event. This was the event's 5th year in New Zealand and around 300 people attended including two of our team here from Online Designs.

There were loads of interesting discussion topics including getting the most from Google analytics, website development for mobile devices and workshops on HTML5.

A new feature of the event introduced was the Panel of the Year, which focused on the role the internet will be playing in NZ in the next few years. This panel included 3 MPs (Gareth Hughes, Clare Curran and Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga), TUANZ CEO (Paul Brislen) and InternetNZ (Vikram Kumar) as well as legal and political commentators Tim Mullins and David Farrar. The debate touched on issues such as the 3 strikes bill and the ultra-fast broadband initiative.

The event was held in Botany Downs on the 16th of July and both Anaru and Jo said it was definitely worth attending and they learned loads!
