As we head into the final few weeks of 2011, I would like to say a big thank you to all our friends and colleagues. Many of us have worked closely together to resolve some of the major challenges we have faced and we can all feel justly proud of our achievements.
The election of National back into government will mean a consistent approach applied to our industry and I expect the theme of providing value will be high on the agenda again for 2012.
I was exposed to some great ideas at the ITS World Congress in Orlando in October where the theme of “Keeping the Economy Moving” was particularly relevant. It was extremely well attended and supported by the American Government and industry, with many political figures also present.
|
Topics of interest that we have already been discussing with several clients are around the future of car/road environment interface technology, congestion reduction projects, and the future of rapid transport systems.
I look forward to working with you again next year - our 10th year of operation! Have a happy and safe Christmas.

Major milestone as VPT opens |
|
| |
|
|
At 4.48am on 14th November 2011, traffic began to flow smoothly through the Victoria Park Tunnel, three months earlier than scheduled.
The opening of the $340m tunnel was the first staged step in upgrading the capacity of State Highway 1 between the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Auckland CBD.
Anthony Chiu from Resolve Group has been seconded to the Auckland Motorway Alliance (AMA) to manage the co-ordination process to ensure that the AMA was ready and prepared to operate and maintain the tunnel once opened. |
|
 |
But Resolve Group has been actively engaged with this project in a variety of other roles. Steve Griffith and Martin Leak were involved with the co-ordination of the tunnel into DYNAC, the new Advanced Traffic Management system (see article below).
As part of the Emergency Exercises Control Team, Darren Cash and Gary Choromanski had overall responsibility for the management and delivery of the pre-opening Emergency Exercises.
Participants in the two Emergency Exercises included the NZ Fire Service, NZ Police, Auckland Council Civil Defence, AMA, NZTA, Joint Traffic Operations Centre and the Victoria Park Alliance. Everyone found the Emergency Exercises hugely beneficial and there is now a higher level of preparedness to face a real incident in the tunnel. |

Service improvements in the 'Naki' |
|
| |
New Plymouth District Council is improving the way its maintenance services are delivered to customers, including a change to Contractors’ management and design capability. The new system will enable Contractors to make proactive decisions within a defined scope, and make robust technical recommendations for network improvements that integrate with Council’s overall network management.
Contractors will become an integral part of Council’s network management team, driven by a common culture that seeks to optimise performance of the networks and customer services. They will have general management, maintenance and operational responsibilities for the network and a defined level of ‘ownership’ of the performance of the networks.
Resolve Group is currently producing maintenance contract documents for the piped services and the new Contracts are expected to commence in July 2012. |

Innovation recognition at the AMA |
|
| |
The Auckland Motorway Alliance (AMA) has prided itself on creating a culture where new innovative ideas are encouraged and recognised for their merit. We were keen to present some new ideas to the AMA, ranging from simple off-ramp widening, to full interchange reconfigurations.
For ease and simplicity we presented these innovations in the AMA “ideas slides” format which are much easier to digest than a project feasibility report.
Our efforts were rewarded by Tony Fisher, Director of the AMA who presented Resolve Group with an Innovation Award at the monthly staff "sticky bun" presentation. |

New system to improve Traffic Management |
|
|
NZTA is implementing a full replacement of its existing Traffic Management System with an Advanced Traffic Management System called DYNAC.
As Project Manager, Steve Griffith from Resolve Group is overseeing the development of the current third phase which consists of the integration of Regional Variable Message Signs into DYNAC, and also the development of the GIS viewer for operators at the Joint Traffic Operation Centres (JTOC) in Auckland and Wellington.
Steve has been working closely with DYNAC’s technical and software developers from Transdyn to ensure the delivery of this phase is on time and within budget. This has included close coordination with the recently opened Victoria Park Tunnel, which has a complex tunnel monitoring system controlled by DYNAC.
"The project is going really well so far,” says Steve. “We expect the current phase of the project to go live in mid-February 2012, which will be a great result." |

Alliance Contracting Conference |
|
The Alliance Contracting conference held in Wellington last month produced some passionate debate about the benefits of using well-connected and collaborative teams to achieve breakthrough performance.
These discussions were led by leading players at the cutting edge of this delivery model including:
• Duncan Gibb, Alliance Manager for Stronger
Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT)
• Martin Wood, Alliance Manager, SAFElink Alliance,
Queensland, Australia
• Dr Jim Bentley, Alliance Project Manager for the
MacKays to Peka Peka Alliance
• Mike Howat, Alliance Chair, Newmarket Viaduct Alliance
|
|
 |
“Duncan Gibb’s description of the damage sustained in the Christchurch earthquakes was sobering,” says Michael Kwok. “Clearly, a strong and allied team is essential to deal with the enormous task of delivering resilient infrastructure back into Christchurch.”
Michael was in the Garden City prior to attending this conference and has described demolition and construction progress to the Resolve Group team. |
