Word from the top

Throughout 2010 it has been a privilege to be involved in many of New Zealand’s major infrastructure projects and we have enjoyed working with existing clients as well as forming new client relationships.

The formation of the new Auckland Council has provoked significant interest and the appointment of Mayor Len Brown and other key positions at the new Council ensures we can look forward to a period of certainty and growth for the Auckland region. This growth will require significant effort and our industry must support one another to ensure that the key objectives of the Auckland Council can be met.

I would like to congratulate the NZTA on its excellent job of the smooth execution of the Southbound Switch on the Newmarket Viaduct in early September.

New Zealand and the NZTA continue to prepare for the international sporting production of the Rugby World Cup in 2011. Our national infrastructure will be in the spotlight and as part of our role at the Auckland Motorway Alliance (AMA), Resolve Group has developed a highly commended Rugby World Cup traffic implementation plan. This is currently being put into action in Auckland and Wellington to ensure the motorways look their best. I am particularly proud that Resolve Group is contributing to this global event! I wish you all a safe and happy holiday.

resolvegroup Arash Bazrin

We are pleased to welcome two new staff members to add further strength to the Resolve Group team.

Many of you will know Peter Sansom from his previous role at ARTA in asset, facilities and commercial management.

Peter has broad experience in the transport sector and will be focusing on ITS projects, integrated transport: road, rail, bus and ferry, as well as working as a Principal Engineer.

Arash Bazrin is actually Scottish, not Iranian as his name would suggest. He is a registered engineer with over seven years experience working on a variety of projects in the UK and in New Zealand.

Arash has had previous roles at MWH, URS and Frame Group where he was responsible for design, contract preparation, project management and site supervision of a number of projects ranging from maintenance to capital projects.

The Atiamuri Bridge is a steel bridge near Tokoroa that has suffered from a series of structural fatigue failures and needs to be replaced.

The bridge replacement is one of the first projects undertaken by the NZTA using the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model. Following our role in the procurement phase of this contract, and our previous experience with ECI projects, Resolve Group has been engaged as Principal’s Advisor to NZTA.

Our role is to ensure that the overall objective of a timely bridge replacement within this relatively new delivery model is achieved. As well as co-ordinating the ECI process, we have also participated in design and project control group meetings and reviewed documentation.

Construction for the bridge is due to start early next year.

International Road Safety Congress

Warren Fowlie recently represented Resolve Group at the Road Safety Congress in Argentina, where he presented a paper on Road Safety Infrastructure in New Zealand.

With over 1200 delegates from around Latin America, Spain and Portugal, Warren was able to meet with a wide variety of road safety experts and learn about the latest technology for road safety products and services.

“There is a great deal of work to be done in Latin America,” says Warren. “Many of the national highway agencies are setting very high levels of reductions in fatal crashes. For example, Argentina is looking at a 50% reduction in the next 10 years.”

Resolve Group’s expertise in road safety and road safety audits is growing steadily with commissions in NZ and overseas, particularly Latin America.

resolvegroupConstruction Management of new Travel Demand Management System resolvegroup

Resolve Group, along with Beca recently assisted the NZTA with the installation and construction of the travel demand management (TDM) on the newly opened SH20-1 Manukau Extension project. This major project is part of the Western Ring Route and connects the SH20 Puhinui Interchange through to SH1.

Tasked with managing construction, Resolve Group ensured that the TDM system was operational in time for the SH20-1 project opening. We were also responsible for the quality assurance of ducts, loop detectors, pole foundations, poles, signage, and other associated infrastructure, as well as assisting with the coordination of on-site activities.

The new TDM is an added benefit to the Extension which opened in August 2010.

Resolve Group have been assisting KiwiRail in the procurement of an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) project for the life extension of the award winning Makatote Viaduct, located near Waiouru.

The ECI method of procurement was selected because of the significant risks involved with the selection of a corrosion protection system, consenting and implementation for this project.

We have been preparing the tender documentation, undertaking the tender management and are also a member of the Evaluation team for this high-risk project.
